About JUnior club
Whether you're picking up a stick for the first time or already love the game, junior hockey is about fun, friendship, and skill-building on the turf! Our HUHC Junior Club helps young players learn, grow, and enjoy the sport in a supportive and encouraging environment. With exciting games and a great team spirit, there’s a place for everyone no matter your level.
Hutt United Hockey Club (HUHC) is based at Fraser Park, Avalon, and our Junior grades are for primary school-aged children. The club is run entirely with volunteer effort and dedication: every team has a coach and a manager and at a club level we have a committee that runs year-round to organise all the club's people, logistics and happenings. See info below on your HUHC Junior Club leads.
In New Zealand, hockey for children in school years 1-8 is “Small Sticks”.
See below for info on each grade, and also the Hockey NZ website.

WHA times may alter start times as needed
END OF YEAR 8? From Year 9, players register via their school
WHA strongly encourage teenagers to participate in college hockey where possible, as there are significant development benefits from playing alongside and against peers, rather than primarily in a competition designed for adults.
A FAQ is: 'When can my teen play Senior Club (Open grade) hockey?
Unless granted a dispensation by WHA, players must be at least 14 years at the start of the season (Day 1 of Open grade, usually in April) to play for P2 and lower, and must be at least 15 years or older as of the start of the season to play for a P1 team (see WHA Open Grade handbook). Dispensations may only be requested from WHA by our Club Secretary.
HUHC welcomes teenage players (over 14) to play club alongside college hockey.
To try out for Open Grade, come along to HUHC Senior Trials - see website and social media channels for dates.
